They tell me I have a 65% chance of resembling Kenneth Branagh. And get this... A 60% resemblance to Bill Gates. I wish I had 60% of his money, that's for sure.

Here's a totally fun little mystery for the solving. "A Case Of T he Crabs" is a point and click flash game in the black and white "film noir" style. Great blend of mystery and shellfish!

Something stinks and it smells like crab, only there's something funny about these crustaceans. You play as Detective Nick Bounty, who despite his ability to solve the most tangled cases, has yet to work for a paying client. This time it's up to you to discover who knocked off a local seafood salesman and get to the bottom of a diabolical counterfeiting operation!

Not a Boy Scout or Sailor? Visit IWillKnot

I've been both a Boy Scout and a Sailor, and for the life of me, I can't remember how to tie a decent knot. I know it's sad but true.

Luckily for me, there is iwillknot, a website that has excellent step by step video of some very common and not so very common knots.

Before you begin, here are a couple quick knot-tying tips to keep in mind:

Get youself some nice, thick rope -- don't learn with string! String is extremely hard to control, and your knots will be so small that you won't be able to see what is going on. About 4 feet of 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick nylon rope will do nicely for learning purposes. Any good hardware store will have this, and it is very inexpensive.

Once you've mastered how to tie a knot from the clips, trying tying it around different sort of objects, at different angles. You don't really know a knot until you can tie it upside-down and inside-out!

This may sound a bit boring to you but, it's actually a neat website to visit. Go take a look!

No Snowshoes. No Problem

Ok, I admit it. I don't ski, I don't own a snowmobile (yet), and I'm too poor to even buy a decent pair of snowshoes. That's where my trouble starts.

I'm one of those people that loves to hike, and I usually start to get Cabin Fever in December, and that desperation inspired creative thinking. I started hiking on top of groomed snowmobile trails. It works great, I get to hike and enjoy the complete silence of Winter solitude. Assuming I hike on any day other then a Saturday or Sunday. If you try these types of hikes on a weekend your likely to get run over by a 80mph snow machine.

One of my favorite snowmobile trail hikes is Stanley Lake and the Elk Mountain Loop. During the Summer months, this is a hugely popular mountain biking destination. However, I can just about guarantee that you won't see any bikes on this trail in December. Frozen Stanley Lake framed by the majestic Mount McGown backdrop, is a must see. To get to the head of the Stanley Lake snowmobile trail head just drive four miles west of Stanley on State Highway 21 to the "Stanley Lake Access Road" just past mile marker 126, then park. (real tough huh?)

There are hundreds of other groomed trails in Idaho. Just take a look at any National Forest Service map to find which trails are groomed for Snowmobiles. The snowmobile section of Idahowinter.org is an excellent resource for finding trails also.

In fact Idahowinter.org has a very comprehensive site for several Idaho winter activities.

So, if you've been using the "I don't have a pair of snowshoes" excuse to stay inside all Winter and be miserable. Get out there and hike!

Hapland 2

Hapland 2 is a great Flash puzzle game by kakbarnf. It totally kicked my butt! In fact when I first tried the game it made no sense to me at all but, sticking with it, I became completely addicted to it.

Unfortunatly... I am not the sharpest tool in the shed. I finally broke down and found a Hapland 2 walkthrough and cheated my way through the last of it. What can I say? I'm weak... ok.

here's the story:
two fellas started this so that you could write yourself a letter to be delivered at a later date. we've all had to do them in high school and college. it's sorta cool to receive a letter from yourself about where you thought you'd be a year (two years? more?) later. FutureMe.org is based on the principle that memories are less accurate than emails. we strive for accuracy.

I wish they let us attach photos to the email message but, as far as I can tell there is no option for that. Have fun killing Time!

I got this little tidbit from an Interview with SBC CEO Edward Whitacre, with BussinessWeek Online.

How concerned are you about Internet upstarts like Google ( GOOG ), MSN, Vonage, and others?
How do you think they're going to get to customers? Through a broadbandpipe. Cable companies have them. We have them. Now what they would liketo do is use my pipes free, but I ain't going to let them do thatbecause we have spent this capital and we have to have a return on it.So there's going to have to be some mechanism for these people who usethese pipes to pay for the portion they're using. Why should they beallowed to use my pipes?

The Internet can't be free in that sense, because we and the cable companies have made an investment and for a Google or Yahoo! ( YHOO ) or Vonage or anybody to expect to use these pipes [for] free is nuts

My thought is this... "We'll just see about that!!!"

And on a side note... Those pipes are already paid for by all the people that SBC and the Cable compaines overcharge their customers for on a monthly basis. I think he would like it if he could charge twice for the same service. Your a JERK Eddie!

Kelly and I made it out to the the desert this last weekend. We went out to Leslie Gulch and had a great time. There were Bighorn Sheep everywhere. The scenery was spectacular! Later this week we are going up to The Moon Dipper, on the banks of The Middle Fork Payette River. I'll be sure to post about that trip too. Over at the Fractals of Change blog, there is something that makes a person feel good about the general "goings on" of the Internet.

It turns out that we voluntarily do thing we don’t get paid for, even for strangers. Sometimes we even do good anonymously. Now go figure. What a way to screw up the economists’ models.

This aberrant and apparently unmotivated behavior was the subject of lots of discussion at Union Square Ventures Sessions event in New York last week. We were talking about Web 2.0 stuff (aka Bubble 2.0) and voluntary and collaborative behavior are a big part of what’s going on. Would be nice to know why it’s happening and if it’s going to continue before making any big bets. Are all the volunteers going to present a bill someday? To whom? How much?

Flock is Public

Flock just went public. I'm so diggity excited about this. Now we get to see if this new browser can live up to all the hype. I gotta tell you though, my initial thought is "Heck yes it can!"

I write this post using the intergrated blogging tools that come with flock. Drag and drop images and links right into the browser topbar for blogging. The favorites are organized way cool, using del.icio.us and tagging of course. There are so many neato features that come stock on this browser, I don't really know where to start.

I can't wait to see what happens when Firefox extensions become more compatible with Flock (either Flock makes some changes, or firefox extension authors make some changes), my guess is that some pretty fun stuff is on the way.

I'm really big on the idea of a more interactive Internet. So go give Flock a try!

Free Legal Movies

I love it when I actually have the chance to go download stuff legally! Just the other day was led to a great web site full of public domain movies. http://www.archive.org/ has a wide variety of classic movies to download or stream for free.

But, keeping in theme with the season, I'm interested in Horror movies. You know the kind I'm talking about. The old black and white ones you would watch as a kid late at on a friday night on "Creature Feature" Movies with titles like "The Brain That Wouldn't Die", "The Phantom Ship", and "The Terror" Those old movies just scared the crap out of me.

My Favorite pick of the bunch has got be "Carnival of Souls".

Mary Henry is enjoying the day by riding around with two friends but everything goes wrong when challenged to a drag race and their car gets forced off of a bridge. The car sinks into the murky depths, and all three women are assumed drowned. Some time later Mary emerges unscathed from the river. She tries to start a new life by becoming a church organist but Mary finds herself haunted by a ghostly figure that instills fear and dread into her.

But, that's just me, if your in the mood for something a bit more mellow go get "Charade" starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. How could a movie be bad with those two in it??

Enjoy the flicks! If you want to kill Time, play a game of Frozen Bubble it's a classic, and probably my wife's favorite all time game.

Streampad... My music anywhere

Just last week I was trying to find an application that would let me listen to the tunes in my music library at home from remote locations (i.e. work). I didn't want to set up a shoutcast server and the only Ajax option I could find involved me setting up PHP and SQL on my Linux box. That seemed like a bit of a pain in the rear, but I figured, what the heck, and I was about to do exactly that this weekend.

But then fate intervened and a quick browse of del.icio.us brought up a link that led me to Streampad. That was incredible luck! Here's an application that does exactly what I want.

"Streampad is a web-based audio player that allows you to listen to your own music streamed directly from your home computer.

Streampad allows you to see what other people are listening to in real-time, and add them to your friends list. You can discover new music and new people. There is even a sweet Google Maps mashup inside!"

Streampad is being worked on as a hobby by Daniel Kantor and his girlfriend Isabel Staicut. I sure hope their day jobs don't start leaning on them to heavy, I want them to keep up the good craftsmanship.

Harvey Danger get's a new fan

Harvey Danger just released a new album on Sep. 13 in the stores, and it's pretty dang good too.

So what's the big deal? Bands release new albums every day. But Harvey Danger made the decision to release the album in mp3 format on the web both as a direct download and as a torrent on Sep. 28. They have a bunch of real good reasons for this innovative from of album release which you can read about here.

I sure hope that it works out for these guys. They are really trying to find a way of working with the file sharing community, and also have the file sharing community work for them. In all honesty, as soon as I get into a record store I'll probably go buy "Little by Little" just because I want to support somebody actually looking for a solution to the file sharing issue.

Plus I just can't stand the RIAA. I don't care if they are right or wrong at this point. It just turns my stomach to see some huge industry suing collage kids, single mothers, grandpa's, and young parents... Just to make some kind of point. Well they made it... now they can go choke on their money for all I care.

To keep things short and sweet, not long and bitter (I can get that way about the RIAA), I love the idealism and spirit in which Harvey Danger releases this album. Here is a piece of what they say on their web site.

"At the risk of sounding Pollyanna-ish, making records has never been about making money for this band. If the worst thing that happens is a whole bunch of people hear Little By Little… and no one buys it, we'll know our experiment was costly. But that won’t make it a failure"

Meebo. The cool little app with the stupid little name

So, as usual I've been looking into things I don't really know anything about. Tonight it was Ajax. I've seen the name tossed around the Internet a lot recently, basically I just ignored it. After reading a little bit about it tonight though I'm starting to gain some interest.

I visited http://www.aventureforth.com/ which is not typically my type of website (venture capitol... LOL) but, I followed some links and wound up there anyway. I found that it was a great source of information concerning Ajax. I visited a couple of the links from it's top ten Ajax applications list, and I learned a thing or two.

I guess that Ajax has been around for about 5 years. Microsoft has been it's biggest proponent, including the technology into a few of it's applications including Outlook. But Ajax is now coming into the spotlight thanks to Google's Gmail, suggest, and maps. One of the sweetest features is Ajax's ability to send and receive to a server without a browser refresh. Pretty Cool huh?

So I tried one of the newest Ajax applications on the web that is getting some pretty good press. Meebo is an Ajax based multi-client Instant Messenger.

I think that there are a couple groups of people that will enjoy using this particular application.

People with a ton of contacts on different chat clients will like it because, Meebo allows you to connect to the biggest chat clients around Yahoo, MSN, AIM, GTalk, ICQ, and Jabber. And it uses a fraction of the resources that other apps use (Trillian, Miranda, and Gaim to name a few) However you do have to sacrifice on features.

People that like to piss off the IT department at work will love this little gem. Meebo runs right there inside your Internet browser.

But, Can They Find My Car Keys?

Hands down, Google is the search master of the whole digitized world. With it you can search the web for images, bargains, maps, news, and just about anything else you can think of.

Just yesterday I found out that they also have a new feature called Google Video. I'm a sucker for Internet video, I just love all those homemade spoofs. Google Video offers a great opportunity for mindless time killing. (I'm totally down with Time killing)

I Like Linux... Really... I Promise

I just got done reading Paul Murphy's blog on ZDNet "Linux: when Yes becomes Nooo", in which he sings high praises for Linux. Overviewing how a great operating system is simply misunderstood. The whole point of his blog is to mention what conditions should be met to win people over to Linux.

The "take home point" of his article from my perspective is this; Linux is great, People just don't understand it and operate it wrong.

If you continue to read the feedback comments the truth really starts to come out about this issue.

Linux does not easily recognize uncommon hardware
Media support (codecs, drivers, etc.) vary from distro to distro
It's never an easy process to install an application
USERS LIKE THE GUI
Don't blame everything but the operating system itself

I'm no expert, I just use Linux part time. There are a ton of benifits to actually using that operating system. I think that's why I hate to see such a wonderful creation being defeated by it's own fan base. I think Linux developers, users, and loudmouth bloggers, should look instead into what can make Linux better. Not look at what other people are doing wrong.

Everytime I go into a help forum for Linux, I see some new guy asking for help. He usually gets some cryptic leetist response telling him to get into the shell and perform some kind of programmer mumbo jumbo. When I happen to know that it is just as easy to use the KDE or Gnome GUI. What the heck is up with that?!?

Not like I really care or anything... If you really want something worthwile to do... Go check out this version of online PacMan!

Who’s The Good Guy??

“Poisoned Torrents Plague Mybittorrent” was the headline that I read on Slashdot this morning, and it led me to another headline “New Breed of Corrupt Torrent Infiltrates BitTorrent”. Where it turns out that there are a bunch of fake files that basically give your computer false information.

Nobody has said who is responsible for the corrupted files, and I guess I don’t really know either, but I know who is probably pretty dang happy that something like this is going on. I just wonder what’s going to come along next.

It doesn’t really matter which side of the Peer to Peer fence you stand on, all the crap getting flung around the Internet and the News is getting so thick that it makes me want to throw every piece of digital entertainment I own into the dump, and just pick up a book and guitar (If I could play a guitar). No more CD, MP3, DVD or even TV.

Dang! A Chill Just Ran Up My Back

I'm taking a real good look at all the flowers I see, pouring the image of them into my leaky bucket of a mind. I want to keep the memory through as much of the Winter as I can.

I have to admit, I'm not sorry to see the blazing, unbearable heat of Summer get beaten back by a brisk Autumn. In fact, the Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the early snow on the mountains, crunching leaves beneath my feet, smoky chimneys, and God bless Collage Football. The Autumn has always been a time of settling down for me, I don't know how to explain it, healing maybe, or reflection. I wish I had a word for it, maybe I'll make one up some day. It feels like Smooth Jazz, a girls giggle, and chocolate chip cookies. The cool crisp weather makes me warm inside.

But looking ahead somewhat, the Winters can start to drag on a bit once January gets here. So I start looking early in the Fall, for things that will act as an Immunization against Cabin Fever that I'm sure to catch at some point in the coming months.

I don't know what I ever did before the Internet came along. Just today I found lots of great little time killers. A big bundle of them in one spot http://uzful.org/ There's tons of stuff there. I may even try to learn a thing or two this year as the weather gets cold. I guess if I'm going to be inside in front of the PC all the time, I may as well get something out of it. Right?

Have you ever seen a trailer for a movie that really got your blood pumping. You wait for weeks, months, or even years (Lucas, you SOB!) then when the grand day arrives you stand in line for hours, get your popcorn, empty your bladder, and settle in for 2 hours of theatrical powerhouse entertainment... Only to discover that the long awaited flick is a bit of a let down. (I hate it when that happens)

Well, I have to admit that I'm experiencing some grand expectations for the new Flock Internet Browser. Deeper ineratction with the Internet, built in social and blogging tools, PLUS built on the foundation of Firefox... how friggin cool is that?? I just hope that after all this waiting, I don't experience a bit of a let down.

I Can See Your House From Here!

Everybody knows that saying "Where ever you go... There you are" I agree with that. The biggest trouble I usually have though, is knowing just where the hell I am. I may think that I'm confused, when really I'm in Love. I might wish it was Saturday but, it's only Tuesday. I Think I'm in Dunoon but, I'm just rolling out of bed in good old Boise.

I'm an avid outdoorsman. One of the first lessons I learned in the back country was the importance of knowing where I was (not always as easy as it sounds). In time, I became a huge fan of the Map and Compass. I also take full advantage of the free resources that the Internet offers, one of my favorites is Terraserver, it's just plain old fun anyway to find a satalite photo of your house. Anyway, back to the point... which is, if you don't know where you are... you absolutely are not going to find your way home, unless you are well watched over by God (God watches over Children and Fools, and I haven't been a Child in a lot of years).

I often find that the lessons I've learned in the Mountains are just as applicable in my home life. If I don't know what I believe about an issue or what kind of particular trouble I am experiencing... Then I don't stand a chance of finding any solution. That seems to be a problem for me, as most of the time I don't know where the hell I am! (but like I said, luckily, God watches over Fools)

With Both Hands And A Flashlight!

I never claimed to be intelligent, smart, clever, or even a little bit witty. The whole Blog concept is new to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read plenty of other peoples Blogs (usually the techie kind) but, this is my first attempt at actually keeping one going my self.

Needless to say… I have no friggin’ clue what I’m doing. Luckily there have been a couple of people around on the Internet that do know what they are doing and, I am reading up as much as I can.

I really like blogger-templates at BlogSpot. I’m just ADD enough that I’ll probably try every dang template that guy has on his Blog.

I also just got hooked up with the RSS reader Bloglines, so I could keep up with all the junk and stuff and things that I want to keep up with. You may have guessed that I didn’t have a clue about RSS, and you would be right! Now I wonder how I ever got by without it. Aside from Blogs I also get most of my news off the Internet. I just love the idea of sites like Slashdot, Wired, and my local news, all being in one tidy little place. I got it all set up with a great online tutorial by betterdays.

Give me a little time and I just might start to get into the swing of things... But, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

There’s a BullsEye on my back

I spent life living in bliss, not Nirvana or Zen, not anything remotely transcendental, just good old fashioned ignorance. I didn’t see the big BullsEye on my Back. It seems that Time would like to kill me, and the sad sorry truth of the matter is… Time will kill me. In the end, that’s the root cause of my death, I don’t have to be psychic to know it. Quite simply stated, Time is gunning for me. I could be done in by a car wreck, lung cancer, liver disease, bowling accident gone horribly wrong, mountain lion mauling, or just a plain old heart attack. But, in the end it’s just due to me spending to much time on the planet, and Time doesn't like that.

I plan on doing as much about this as possible. I plan on living life to the fullest, not in a base jumping, ice climbing, race car driving, dare devil sort of way. But, in an appreciate all the things that my mundane life brings to me sort of way.

I figure that there is plenty of great stuff all around me on any given day.
